Hemant Mishra’s Family Background
Hemant Mishra comes from a humble background in Bihar. His family consists of three members – his parents and a sibling. His father Om Prakash Mishra is an employee in the Bihar education department. Hemant’s mother is a teacher in a private school. Like Hemant, his younger brother is also hard working and is an IIT graduate. He is currently an Oracle employee and is working in the US.

Hemant Mishra completed his schooling in Buxar. He completed his intermediate from Patna. After completing his intermediate, Hemant moved to Delhi to study higher. He chose geography for his bachelor’s from Jamia Millia Islamia. He later joined JNU to pursue his masters in Geography. After completing his Master’s from JNU in 2020, he enrolled in his previous college, Jamia Millia Islamia to pursue a PhD. He’s yet to complete his PhD. He will be completing his PhD in waste management this year itself.
Hemant Mishra Work Experience
Hemant Mishra started preparing for state civil services examination in 2021 along with his UPSC preparation. He cleared UPSC examination twice in a row and has also cleared Bihar Public services examination too. He achieved a rank in the UPSC examination in 2022 and secured a Deputy SP post. He went on to achieve 9th rank in the very next year earning the position of an SDM in Mirzapur.

Having completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Geography, Hemant Mishra, UPSC Topper 2024, chose Geography as his optional subject for the UPSC examination. His strong academic foundation and in-depth understanding of the subject gave him a significant advantage, making the preparation for his optional paper more focused and efficient.
Hemant Mishra’s Preparation Strategy
Hemant Mishra, UPSC Topper 2024, didn’t attend any coaching institutions for his preparation. Since he was doing his PhD and job, he barely had any time to attend coaching institutions. He depended solely on self-study for UPSC preparation. Hemant shared that learning from his mistakes was his Preparation Strategy. As someone who has failed three times in a row, he was ready to learn from his mistakes and rectify them. He admitted that he failed thrice because his strategies were not effective. Hemant focused only on the right materials for preparation and admitted that previous year questions are the best way to learn and improve.
His resources for prelims preparation was Minimal, and he made concise notes according to the syllabus for Mains preparation.
Hemant Mishra UPSC Topper 2024 Journey
Hemant Mishra started preparing for UPSC in 2020 after he was done with his master’s from JNU. His attempt in 2024 was not his first, but his fourth. He tasted three failures before tasting success with an All India Rank in 2024. His first attempt was in 2021, shortly after completing his master’s. Unfortunately, he failed to clear in his first attempt and had started to prepare for the State Civil Services too. His second and third attempts gave him heartbreak as he failed to clear prelims in both attempts. He decided to appear for another attempt in 2024. He not only cleared UPSC in his fourth attempt, but also got a Rank that he will remember for a lifetime.
Hemant Mishra’s UPSC Topper 2024 Advice for UPSC Aspirants
Hemant Mishra in an interview, mentioned that aspirants should be ready to work hard and stay patient. He said that every aspirant should have a crystal clear strategy before starting their preparation. He also advised future UPSC aspirants to start preparation by understanding the syllabus first and solving previous year questions. He also added that the focus should mainly be on revision and not the amount of resources.
