Dr. R. Rangamanju, a 29-year-old MBBS graduate, achieved All-India Rank 24 in the Civil Services Examination and emerged as the state topper in Karnataka. His journey from an MBBS graduate to clearing the Civil Services on the sixth attempt is a story of perseverance. He is one of the UPSC Toppers 2024.
Rangamanju’s Family Background
Rangamanju comes from a family with a strong background in public service. His father, R. Ramesh, was an IPS officer. During his third year of college at BMCRI, Rangamanju’s father was diagnosed with blood cancer. His father’s sudden demise while still in service deeply impacted Rangamanju, and his father was his source of inspiration for his path to civil service. He credited his mother for being his pillar throughout his journey.
Rangamanju’s Educational Background
Rangamanju did his schooling at National Public School in Rajajinagar, Bengaluru. He then pursued his MBBS degree from the Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute. He excelled in his studies and earned distinction in his first and second years of college. Rangamanju graduated from BMCRI in 2019.
Rangamanju’s UPSC Journey
Rangamanju’s inspiration to become a civil servant was his late father, R. Ramesh, who was an IPS officer in Karnataka. His initial dream was to become a cardiothoracic surgeon, but the sudden demise of his father made him rethink his dream. He started preparing for his civil services in 2018. Unlike others, Rangamanju decided not to attend any coaching institutes to prepare for his prelims and mains. He started preparing by doing self-study.
An academically gifted student, Rangamanju’s journey to becoming a civil servant was filled with failures. His first five attempts ended up being unsuccessful, and he had to refine his strategy every single time. Rangamanju viewed each failure as a learning experience and a way to improve himself. He decided to appear for the sixth and last time in the UPSC 2024 examination. He not only cleared civil services with an All India Rank 24, but also became the Karnataka state topper.
Rangamanju’s preparation strategy
Rangamanju did not attend any coaching for mains and prelims preparation. He relied on self-study for mains and prelims. He also participated in group discussions and believed that peer group discussions and studies can help in UPSC preparation.
Rangamanju also depended on AI tools to organize various study materials and to track his progress. This helped him in enhancing the efficiency of his preparation. He enrolled in various test series to improve himself and his answer-writing skills. As part of interview preparation, he sought guidance from a private academy.
Rangamanju’s optional paper
For the Mains examination, Rangamanju chose anthropology as his optional subject. Rangamanju found anthropology to be interesting as it explores human societies, cultures, and their development. It also helped him understand human behaviour and societal structures.
Rangamanju’s Interests and Hobbies
Rangamanju is a fan of football and was the captain of the university football team. He also has an interest in Shakespearean recitals. He won first prize for the Shakespeare recital when he was a student. During his fieldwork in 2019, Rangamanju worked as a chief evaluator for UNICEF’s iodine deficiency survey.
From being a doctor to a UPSE Toppers 2024, Rangamanju’s story is an inspiration to everyone who wants to pursue a career in the civil service.
